Abstract

This phenomenological study explored the perception of jail personnel on managing overcrowded jail. This also included the alternatives and procedures they made to cope up with the tasks delegated to them as a jail personnel. The purpose of this study was to uncover what are the different experiences of the jail personnel in management difficulty and to study how the personnel managed to keep going while having such experiences. There were 14 informants involved in the study, 7 in the In-depth interview (IDI) and another 7 from the focus group discussion (FGD). Furthermore, the study used the phenomenological approach of qualitative study. Records of the interviews were analysed using the themes with the help of an expert. Ten (10) themes emerged from the two main questions addressed.  Moreover, this phenomenological study could enhance awareness in the real-life situations happening in our jails today. As more additional laws to be enacted and more law offenders will be imprisoned, thus contributes to the jail congestion.
