Abstract

Generating intentional and expressive choreography is a struggle. Guided by Laban Movement Analysis that choreography is an intentional embodiment of emotions, ideas, and expression shaped through movements, I explored the experiences of contemporary dancers’ choreographic inspiration using a phenomenological design. The data from interviews of ten (10) purposively selected dancers were thematically analyzed. Music, past experiences, and audience emerge and proved to be contributing elements in making choreography intentional and expressive. Future studies may use multiple regression to examine emotion, ideas, and expression as predictors of expressive and intentional choreography, and explore movement and choreographic inspiration as moderating or mediating variables in the link between artistic intent and choreography.
