Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the English language teaching (ELT) in the southern district of the Division of Eastern Samar. In teaching English, the junior high school English teachers are utilizing a mixture of the structural and communicative approaches, they regard their roles as teachers and the needs assessments favorably. Moreover, a good teacher is one who is most knowledgeable of his/her subject matter and that a good learner is one who performs and completes class assignments. On the issue of factors on why students fail in learning English, they regarded student claim they have no talent to use the language. Finally, English teachers still utilize multiple choice type of test for more objective nature of assessment and they conduct such assessment to primarily measure the level of learning of the students. This study recommends the following: a sustained updating of teaching methodologies may be provided to the teachers to be abreast with the pedagogical demands of the modern times; an extension project like a training-workshop may be initiated by language professors in the university to assist basic education teachers with the changing trends of English language teaching; and a follow up study with focus on teaching methodologies with the use of digital tools may be conducted to ensure capacity building for all language teachers in teaching English in the 21st century.
