Abstract

Driven by the vital role of these digital resources in post-pandemic academic research and remote learning, this study explored the awareness and utilization of the University of Baguio (UB) Library's online databases—World Book Online (WBO), EBSCO Academic Search Complete, and ProQuest Central—among 198 students and faculty during the First Semester of School Year 2023-2024. Examining utilization patterns reveals how often and effectively users engage with these tools, pinpointing barriers like interface complexity or content relevance that hinder adoption. Employing a quantitative cross-sectional survey design with a validated questionnaire. Online database awareness levels for World Book, EBSCO, and ProQuest were slightly aware, showing distinct patterns influenced by acquisition history, interface intuitiveness, and promotion—World Book Online leading due to its user-friendly design. Online database utilization remained minimal ("Not Utilized"), directly linked to slightly awareness and constraining academic productivity and research quality. A strong awareness-utilization emerged, framed by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), wherein perceived usefulness and ease of use mediated engagement. Database utilization factors prioritized resource usefulness (rank 1), academic productivity (rank 2), and multidisciplinary access (rank 3), while lower ranks highlighted barriers like technical support (rank 10) and student attitudes (rank 11). Technical barriers, insufficient training, and preference for Google Scholar undermined return on investment for subscriptions. To bridge this gap, the study recommends a multi-pronged database marketing strategy: (1) "Database of the Month" campaigns via social media, QR-coded signage, and newsletters; (2) curriculum-integrated workshops and assignment templates requiring database citations; (3) upgrades for Wi-Fi and mobile access; (4) incentives like research challenges and faculty champions; and (5) bi-annual usage audits. These evidence-based interventions aim to elevate awareness and utilization, enhancing research productivity and positioning UB Library as a cornerstone of the university's scholarly ecosystem.
