Abstract

Low academic and athletic performance is alarming. I explored the challenges, copings, and insights of secondary school track and field student-athletes in balancing academic and athletic performance using qualitative case study. I purposively selected six participants for an in-depth interview and thematically analyzed the data. I found that student-athletes surmounted the difficulty to balancing academic and athletic demands through managing dual performances. Discipline, goal orientation, support value, resilience and personal growth were learned. I suggest that student-athletes’ academic and athletic balance may strengthen through collaborative support from teachers, coaches, and sports coordinators that promotes communication, adaptive coping, reflection, and holistic development. Mediation analysis may be pursued to test how coping, and insights surmounting adversities to positive outcomes and apply Exploratory Factor Analysis to develop a reliable measurement tool.
