Abstract
Low engagement in physical education activities is worrying. I explored the motivation to engage in physical education activities as perceived by senior high students. Qualitative descriptive research design, purposive sampling, in-depth interview, and thematic analysis were the methods I applied. My conversations with my seven participants laid that students’ motivation to engage in physical education activities are shaped by skill development, social connection, and meaningful engagement. Future research may adopt a quantitative research design using multiple regression analysis and Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) to examine predictors of students’ motivation in Physical Education and to develop and validate a reliable measurement instrument. Physical Education may be enhanced by supporting autonomy through choice, building competence through structured and creative skill-based activities with feedback, fostering relatedness through positive social interactions, and integrating intrinsic and extrinsic motivation strategies.
