Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of gamification strategies in enhancing vocabulary recall and retention among 30 Grade 10 ESL learners from the Special Program in Sports at Col. Lauro D. Dizon Memorial Integrated High School. Using a one-group pretest–posttest pre-experimental design, students participated in gamified vocabulary activities, including Vocabulary Bingo, Points and Leaderboards, and Boss Battle. A researcher-made vocabulary test was administered as a pre-test, post-test, and delayed post-test. Data were analyzed using Mean, Standard Deviation, Paired Sample T-test, and Pearson r. Results showed significant improvements in students’ vocabulary recall and retention, as evidenced by higher post-test and delayed post-test scores compared to pre-test scores. The findings indicate that gamification strategies effectively enhanced vocabulary learning outcomes. Based on these results, English teachers are encouraged to integrate gamification into vocabulary instruction, while future studies may explore its effectiveness with larger samples, different grade levels, or other language skills.
