Abstract
The evolution of architectural engineering is increasingly characterized by the convergence of technical performance and human experience. Historically, engineering disciplines have focused on structural safety, durability, efficiency, and compliance, while architectural design has often emphasized aesthetics, spatial quality, and user engagement. Contemporary built environments, however, demand a more integrated approach in which technical excellence and human-centered design are treated as complementary rather than competing objectives. Buildings are expected not only to withstand loads and perform efficiently but also to support well-being, productivity, comfort, health, social interaction, and emotional engagement.
This article explores how architectural engineering can bridge structural performance and experiential design through human-centric methodologies. It examines the relationship between engineering systems and user experience, investigates environmental quality, adaptive infrastructure, occupant-centered performance metrics, digital technologies, and resilience strategies, and proposes an integrated framework for designing buildings that simultaneously achieve technical reliability and human value. The study argues that future engineering practice must move beyond purely functional performance indicators and embrace a broader understanding of how buildings influence human behavior and experience throughout their lifecycle.
