Abstract

The rising number of female convicts worldwide has raised significant concerns, with the Philippines among the countries with the highest rates. This phenomenological qualitative study explored the emotions, factors for success, and challenges faced by female ex-offenders after incarceration. Eight respondents participated, and the researchers employed a full exploratory approach using one-on-one in-depth interviews for data collection. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the qualitative data, yielding eight common themes. Respondents experienced emotional complexity upon reintegration and reported discrimination, economic barriers, and adjustment difficulties as challenges. Factors aiding reintegration included support systems, personal empowerment, effective probation programs, and faith. The study fills a gap in the literature by offering insights into the experiences and needs of female ex-offenders, suggesting that positive social change can occur when their specific needs are understood and supported.
