Abstract

This study determined the predictors of participation in personalized Physical Education (PE) activities among regular Grade 9 junior high school students of Eastern Cabu National High School during the second quarter of the School Year 2025–2026. Specifically, it examined the respondents’ profile, level of participation in personalized PE activities in terms of autonomy, competence, relatedness, and enjoyment orientation, students’ performance in personalized PE activities, the significant relationship between profile and participation predictors, and the relationship between participation predictors and students’ performance. The descriptive-correlational research design was utilized in the study. Data were gathered through a researcher-made questionnaire and analyzed using frequency, percentage, weighted mean, and correlation analysis. Findings revealed that most respondents were female, preferred team-based activities, engaged in physical activity daily, and reported no health concerns. Both students and teachers assessed the predictors of participation in personalized PE activities to a very great extent. Students likewise obtained a Very Satisfactory level of performance, with effort and participation rated Outstanding. Most profile variables showed no significant relationship with participation predictors except preferred activity type with competence and health status with autonomy and enjoyment orientation. Moreover, autonomy, competence, and relatedness showed no significant relationship with students’ performance, while enjoyment orientation had a weak but significant relationship with students’ expression and energy during PE activities.

The study concluded that personalized PE activities positively influence students’ motivation, engagement, and participation. However, motivation alone does not necessarily translate into improved performance except in terms of enjoyment, which enhances students’ enthusiasm and expressiveness. Hence, a learner-centered and enjoyable PE environment is essential in strengthening students’ active participation and performance. Based on the findings, an action plan was proposed to enhance autonomy, competence, relatedness, and enjoyment orientation in personalized PE classes.
