Abstract

Lenten Season is a time to repent and ask for God’s forgiveness through religious offerings and sacrifices. The Filipino cultures and beliefs were influenced by these religious activities and praises during the Spanish regime when they introduced Christianity in 1500s. The depiction of these rituals was transferred from one generation to another. The research investigated the perceived experiences of a religious organization called Tais-dupol Penitentes. Information was gathered through survey questionnaire and used descriptive statistics in interpreting the data through mean percentages. It was found out that penitentes devoted their lives in depicting how the Nazarene the Savior sacrifices during the Lenten celebration. Beliefs of these penitentes were also tested and their reasons for joining show significant impact on their daily lives and activities as devotees. The study is anchored on structural functionalism theory that views religious practices create social cohesion and integration by reaffirming the bonds that people have with each other. In conclusion, they join and perform religious activities to show their faith and love in order to be cleaned, become more high spirited and holy. Further studies may use qualitative research  to understand the lived experiences of the penitentes.
