Abstract

A descriptive qualitative multiple case study design was used to explore the struggles of spouses in marital infidelity relationships in this research. Further, this study applied thematic analysis in analyzing the data gathered from seven (7) participants who had experienced marital infidelity. Results suggest that several themes emerged in the lived experiences of the participants. These include emotional distance, which led to severe psychological issues. The participants reported that the reason for the betrayal was due to long-distance relationships and the distrust in the sacrament of marriage as a result of marital infidelity. However, the participants believed that forgiving their husband was the best way to restore the relationship, and they stayed in the relationship for economic dependency. Furthermore, their coping mechanisms included relying on their children and seeking social support and effective advice from significant others. Lastly, it is interesting to wrote that younger participants appear to have high hopes for their marriage after the marital infidelity. The struggles of spouses in marital infidelity relationships play a significant role in demonstrating that it is a complex issue that can have significant implications for both the individuals involved and their families. Moreover, social workers can advocate for policies and programs that promote healthy marriages and family relationships.
